The Newfoundland and Labrador Government says funding for creating new $10-a-day child care spaces has reached its limit, with no new funds available until April 2026.
This means thousands of families will remain on waitlists. Operators ready to expand high-quality child care can’t move forward. Parents counting on child care can’t return to work. In a province where most children live in child care deserts, delaying new spaces is simply unacceptable.
Child Care Now NL is calling on the provincial and federal governments to work together on an emergency funding solution so new child care spaces can continue to open in the new year. And, we need a transparent plan for growing a high quality child care system that provides child care for all, funded by both the federal and provincial government.
Child care can’t wait and neither can the families and communities that are counting on it.
