Child care advocates in Newfoundland and Labrador are alarmed by recent news that Pitter Patter Inc. – which operates 259 child care spaces at four locations in the metro area – is seeking creditor protection.
“Imagine if schools or hospitals were filing for bankruptcy. Why are we leaving the early learning and care of young children in the hands of profiteers? When risks don’t pay off, families are left in the lurch,” said Yolande Pottie-Sherman of Child Care Now NL.
Prioritizing non-profit expansion is critical to maximizing accountability and public return on investment. It will ensure that all public investment is directed towards creating more spaces, supporting educators, and delivering high quality programs.
“This is an opportunity for Government to make sure that public dollars are going directly to child care programs that families can count on,” said Maria Gentle, Executive Director of YWCA St. John’s.
