2025 Provincial election: Child Care Now — NL

Three questions about child care to ask all candidates

The provincial election gives us a chance to bring the child care workforce crisis to a wider audience. Here’s how you can make that happen.

Advocates call on Newfoundland and Labrador government to support more non-profit child care programs

Child Care Now Newfoundland and Labrador (CCN NL) welcomes the provincial government’s promise of more child care spaces in the coming years. However, the organization is concerned by what appears to be a shift in provincial policy that will see a big growth in the number of for-profit programs financed with public funds.

$10aDay Testimonials

As a part of the Canada Wide Early Learning and Child Care Plan (CWELCC), in 2021 the Government of Canada committed to reducing childcare fees in Early Learning Facilities across the country to $10 per day. Parents have shared their stories on how their lives and the lives of their families have been impacted by accessing $10 a day child care.

It is imperative that we sustain and expand the $10 a day childcare system to ensure no family gets left behind. Child Care Now-NL is committed to the continued advocacy and action required to create a fully funded, accessible, inclusive, and robust child care system in our province.

Statement: Before and After-School Programs

Before and after-school programs are essential parts of our childcare system for school- aged children.

Before and after-school programs are essential parts of our childcare system for school- aged children. Before and after-school care must be affordable – but it should also be accessible, high-quality and inclusive. To ensure access, quality and inclusion:

  • All expansion of before and after-school licensed childcare must be not-for-profit and public. Businesses close when a profit is not guaranteed.
  • The Department of Education is in the best position to operate before and after-school services, and should do so where there is demand.
  • Build seamlessness into the system. Prioritize school-based programs, and ensure that transportation is included in offsite programs.
  • Ensure that Operating Grant funding is sufficient to cover the cost of high-quality programs for school-aged children, including transportation and snacks. Sufficient government funding assures that existing programs are economically viable and high- quality.
  • Early Childhood Educators and other staff require a living wage, pensions, benefits and dignified working conditions. Better working conditions lead to higher-quality programs and lower staff turnover.

Public before and after-school programs in action

The City of St. John’s and Town of Paradise offer after-school programs that use municipal recreation facilities.

The government of Nova Scotia operates a Before and After Program in schools for children 4-12 years old.

In Quebec, school boards are required to operate before and after-school care where there is demand.
